Cheptek was on duty at the Eagol Petrol Station along the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway when Jirongo’s Mercedes-Benz collided head-on with a Climax Coach bus at dawn on Saturday, December 13.
The move has drawn sharp criticism from the Private Security Workers Association, which described the move as unfair and punitive.

The secretary general of the party, Isaac Andabwa, blamed the dismissal of the security guard, saying Cheptek was only performing his professional duties.
“You cannot fire someone because he has been interviewed by the media about Jirongo’s death, while he was on official duty. The information he was giving to investigative agents is part of his mandatory duty as a private security officer at a petrol station. You cannot punish him for giving information,” said Andabwa.
Andabwa added and warned the employer to return Cheptek to work immediately.
“I want to use this opportunity as the chairman of all security forces in Kenya, and also as a board member of the Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU), to give a strong warning to Ephraim’s employer. Failure to reinstate him will see us going to court and suing for unfair dismissal and intimidation of a security officer,” he said.
Cheptek’s testimony about the accident contradicted the version of the bus driver, who claimed that Jirongo was passing the wrong way at the time of the accident.
What did the fired soldier say about Jirongo’s death?
TUKO.co.ke previously reported that Cheptek said the road was clear and that Jirongo entered the petrol station from the Nairobi side.
According to the now fired cop, Jirongo slowed down as if he was refueling, but then drove straight through the station and back to the highway without stopping.
The former MP accelerated and collided head-on with the Climax Coach bus, leaving him dead on the spot.
The conflicting reports have reignited public debate and calls for a more thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding Jirongo’s death.
