Kisii – Governor Simba Arati will continue to be the spokesperson of the Abagusii community in local and national affairs, the elders of the community have confirmed again.

This confirmation means that Arati, who is also the ODM leader, will have the power to give political direction and push the community agenda at the national level towards the 2027 General Election.
Does Arati’s popularity threaten Matiang’i’s plan?
This move complicates the political plans of former Interior Minister Fred Matiang’i, who is trying to gather support from the region for his presidential campaign in 2027.
Matiang’i is one of the main opposition leaders vying for the top seat, but Arati’s growing popularity in the region is threatening his chances.
The brave governor has been making efforts to attract the people to his side, trying to strengthen ODM by establishing grassroots teams, reconciling new partners, and repairing relations with politicians who were his enemies.
His recent engagement with Nyamira Governor, Amos Nyaribo, has elicited mixed reactions.
Nyaribo had previously been touched by Matiang’i and was reported to have taken over his party, the United Progressive Alliance (UPA), for the former Interior Minister for his 2027 presidential plan.
Why did Nyaribo meet Arati before being eliminated?
However, it seems that Arati has attracted Nyaribo and his UPA party to cooperate with ODM and the Joint Government.
The Kisii governor is said to have played a key role in helping Nyaribo survive the impeachment push, a move that almost ended his career.
It is reported that Nyaribo paid a courtesy call on Arati before his impeachment hearing, a move seen as recognition of Arati’s political influence within the Coalition Government.
Arati’s collaboration has even extended to his political opponents, including the Representative of the Central House of Parliament, Sylvanus Osoro, and other leaders connected to the Coalition Government.
This strategy seems to be aimed at strengthening political support, reducing differences, and maintaining ODM’s control in the region.
Can ODM maintain its power in Gusii?
By bringing the UPA closer to the Coalition Government, Arati can confuse Fred Matiang’i’s political plans, especially since Matiang’i appears to be developing an alternative power base through the UPA.
Historically, Kisii and Nyamira counties have been ODM strongholds, something that Arati seems determined to protect and expand.
His fierce defense of party control, along with his strong and mobilizing appearance in major cities, has sparked debate about his long-term political goals.
At the same time, Matiang’i’s influence in the region seems to be facing obstacles as ODM and its allies consolidate their power.
The developments indicate a growing political rivalry in the Gusii region, and its effects may extend beyond local politics.
