What happened before the Chabera accident?

Speaking while he was hospitalized while still recovering from serious injuries, Geoffrey Ochoke explained the situation inside the car before the terrible incident.

Ochoke said the situation in the car was happy, as many continued to celebrate the wedding they had just attended at the Sichira Seventh-day Adventist Church.

“Inside the car there were choir members who were singing, others were telling stories and remembering the joy of the wedding. Suddenly a truck came and hit us, badly damaging the driver’s side. The driver and all those sitting behind him were seriously injured,” he explained.

He added that the truck that collided with them head on was going fast, probably due to being on the way up the mountain.

He said that while the truck driver was trying to pass another vehicle, he left the road and lost direction, which caused the fatal accident.

Despite suffering injuries to his head, chest and legs, Ochoke was among the six survivors who were lucky to live.

After the accident happened on Sunday evening, the family of the deceased rushed to the scene the next morning to find out what happened.

Some of them went to the police station before going to Mochari to identify the bodies of their loved ones.

Patrick Wanga, a family member, said the police told them that the truck driver lost control before colliding with the van.

The truck that hit them was coming from Kisii, while the van was heading towards Kisii as well. We reached the scene of the accident, and all I can say is that I urge road users to be more careful, especially during this festive season,” said Patrick.

He remembered that he had asked them to stay because he had arranged a place for them to travel the next day.

However, they refused saying they had their own car that would take them back to Nyamira.

Ang’awa explained the shock and great sadness they experienced after receiving the news of the many deaths, adding that he could neither eat nor sleep after the incident.
