Trumphena Muthoni: Ruto Recognizes Young Environmental Champion, Awards Nono Prize

Nairobi – President William Ruto has welcomed young environmental activist Truphena Muthoni a few days after she broke the world record for hugging a tree for 72 consecutive hours.

Monday, December 15, the president and his deputy, Kithur Kindikiwelcomed Truphena at the Nairobi Palace.

In his statement, Ruto described Truphena as an exemplary young man whose dedication and commitment reflect the best spirit of the nation.

“Truphena Muthoni is an exemplary young Kenyan whose dedication and determination reflect the best in the spirit of our nation. I had the opportunity to speak with him in my office following his unique and record-breaking act of hugging a natural tree for 72 hours in a row; a meaningful gesture aimed at raising national and international awareness about environmental conservation and climate change,” said Ruto.

In recognition of Truphena’s efforts, the president appointed him as the ambassador of the 15 Billion Tree Planting Campaign.

“Recognizing his courage, resilience and commendable leadership, I have appointed him as the Ambassador of the 15 Billion Tree Planting Campaign, a national program aimed at protecting the future of Kenya’s environment,” the president announced.

The President also revealed that the Kenya Wildlife Services (KWS) and the Kenya Tourism Board (KTB) will provide Truphena and her team with a fully funded holiday trip.

What national award did Ruto present to Truphena Muthoni?

Ruto also announced that the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Forestry will sponsor Truphena’s trip to Brazil to broaden her understanding of international conservation efforts.

In addition, the president awarded Truphena the President’s Commendation Medal (Head of State Commendation – HSC) for his exemplary contribution to environmental protection.

“In further recognition of his advocacy efforts, the Kenya Wildlife Service and the Kenya Tourism Board have offered him and his team a fully funded holiday. In addition, the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Forestry will help fulfill his dream of visiting Brazil, broadening his experience in international conservation initiatives and environmental leadership,” he said.

In other news, Truphena Muthoni, whose act of hugging a tree made headlines, received many gifts from people who admired her work.

The young lady’s efforts attracted ordinary people and senior leaders in the community. After completing the difficult task he started, Muthoni headed to Nyeri where he received all the gifts he was promised earlier.

He was promised KSh 1,000,000 from a betting company and KSh 100,000 to help him register for Guinness World Records.
