The mother of late gospel singer Betty Bayo is calling on authorities to launch an official inquest into her daughter’s untimely death.
Bayo passed away on November 10, 2025, at Kenyatta National Hospital, where she had been receiving medical treatment. A family spokesperson, joined by the singer’s husband Hiram Gitau, confirmed that she succumbed to leukaemia.
Now, Joyce Wairimu Mbugua, Bayo’s mother, has petitioned the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) through Omenke Andeje & Company Advocates, seeking an urgent investigation into the circumstances surrounding her daughter’s death.
The family suspects foul play in the demise of the ‘11th Hour’ hitmaker. Wairimu contends that Bayo had shown no prior signs of illness, making her death mysterious. She also claims that authorities denied the family access to an autopsy report and hurriedly proceeded with the burial, raising concerns that crucial facts about her death may have been concealed.
“The family thus express their utmost disdain, and thus demands that you hereby direct the Inspector General to urgently move with speed and institute an inquest into the circumstances surrounding the death of Beatrice Wairimu Mbugua alias Betty Bayo,” reads the letter to the DPP.
Wairimu further says the family was denied access to medical records and information about the treatments her daughter received prior to her death.
When the family first announced Bayo’s death on November 10, the spokesperson, alongside her husband Gitau, revealed that the singer had suffered excessive bleeding before passing away.
