Why didn’t Ida tell Raila about Beryl Achieng’s illness
He admitted that seeing Achieng’s suffering made him afraid of Raila, due to the proximity of his brothers.
“I once went to see her in the hospital. She could not speak. She had all these equipment. I was very disappointed, and then I found her children, Taurai and Ami. When I came back, I told Raila, ‘Don’t go see Beryl now; she is fine.’ I did not want Raila to see him in that situation. I knew it would kill him because they were so close,” Ida said.
He further revealed that after Raila’s death, he begged the family not to reveal the sad news to Achieng’, fearing the effects it would have on his fragile health.
“When Raila went to India and died, I told the family not to tell Beryl. I don’t know if they kept that promise, but I didn’t want to go see her because I knew I couldn’t bear the pain. Somehow, someone must have revealed the secret to her, and here we are today. I was still mourning Raila, and now Beryl,” Ida said.
