Sankara was speaking at Beryl Achieng’s funeral, which is being held in Kang’o Ka Jaramogi, where Odinga’s family is based.
Beryl, who was Raila Odinga’s sister, died on November 25 after a long battle with cancer. He also did not attend his brother’s funeral.
What did Ruth Odinga’s son say at Beryl’s funeral?
While paying his respects, Sankara, a trained lawyer, noted that he was attacked and prevented from speaking, and chose to address his cousins in an embrace of unity and solidarity.
“As a family of the third generation of Jaramogi, I want to say that we need to remain united at this stage. The reason I say that is because generally, as we have seen for a while, we only meet during funerals. We only do things together during disasters. Now, I would like to say that if we want to have any other events, let’s make sure we meet, we gather and create a stable family in the future. We don’t need to meet during funerals,” he said. Sankara also reminded his cousins to follow in the footsteps of their uncle and aunt and embrace the unity they had in keeping the Jaramogi family strong.
“To me Aunt Beryl was more than an aunt. She was compassionate, unifying, the best aunt one could ask for. Someone who brought us together in times of need and despair. When my mother was in trouble, when she was sick, during COVID-19, when she couldn’t do anything, Aunt B was there for us; she has always been there. She was my godmother,” he added.
He encouraged the family to unite and make sure they make others in the family who can be like Raila and Beryl.
