Cynthia Chebii, the chief clinical officer at Langalanga Sub-County Hospital, publicly condemned the alleged failure in the Baringo health sector following the death of her cousin, Lynn Chemutai.

What caused the death of Lynn Chemutai?

Chemutai, who was a county ambulance driver for over a decade, died shortly after being denied an ambulance during a medical emergency.

According to Chebii, Chemutai was reportedly asked to pay for the ambulance services in advance, forcing the family to resort to taxis.

“This was their own driver, who drove an ambulance for more than 10 years, saving lives. But when it was his turn, he was rejected. And when I speak, they follow me. At that time Chemutai had a bowel obstruction. They demanded KSh 11,000, which he did not have. His partner had to help his mother with KSh 2,000, and his mother added another KSh 2,000 before they managed to bring the driver from the county Baringo to Nakuru,” he said. Speaking at Chemutai’s funeral, Chebii insisted that quick intervention could have saved his cousin’s life.

However, his views were contradicted by the Chief Health Officer of Baringo, Solomon Sirma, who while attending the county assembly meeting, said:

“The man died three to four days after leaving Kabarnet. Even if there was an ambulance, it would not have been able to save his life.”

Why was Cynthia Chebii transferred?

A few days later, Chebii received a letter of transfer and demotion, written as a request from him. According to him, the action was organized by officials from Baringo county.

“For the record, it is written ‘my own request.’ I did not pray, and I have never worked well. We are public servants, but it seems we have no right to speak,” he said.

Chebii, who insisted that his remarks reflected the family’s experience, further alleged that an officer asked him to apologise.

“Instead of fixing their mess, they come looking for a useless person like me. They keep saying, ‘It’s a small thing, we’ll take care of it.’ Yes, you have taken care of me, but how has that helped the people of Baringo? One officer even told me to come and apologize. Why should I do that? Why? I am not against the transfer—I would say it is normal—but it is not,” he added.
