Ruth recalled the memories they shared, saying that Beryl raised her and that they were like best friends.

“I think I know Beryl like the back of my hand. I won’t talk much today, but she was one of the best friends I ever had. As my elder sister, she was the one who was with me here in Kenya when my other brothers and sisters were studying abroad. I am the last born, very close to the age of their children. Beryl is the one who raised me; she is the very first person I knew,” he said.

She also told how Beryl used to help her shave or style her hair, so much so that she saw herself as her sister’s ‘doll’, which their father did not like.

Ruth described Beryl as a very loving person, who was like a mother to all her siblings.

“There was something special about Beryl—when you saw her you wanted her to hug you, and she really did hug people. I lived with Beryl. I was brought up in Oburu’s house. She hugged us all,” he said.

Ruth also remembered how her sister guaranteed her a good education when they were living in Zimbabwe, and recalled that Beryl was the first black woman to hold the position of Town Clerk in the city of Mutare.Mutare.

How Beryl Received the News of Raila’s Death
