Bildad Simiyu, who was enjoying the popular route on Saturday, found himself stuck in a very dangerous position for rescuers to reach in the dark.
How Simiyu was saved
As night fell, Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) officers kept their torches on him, constantly talking to him to calm him down and monitor his condition.
With the volcanic rock walls making any attempt dangerous, the team chose to stay on the edge overnight, maintaining contact until daylight.
At dawn, a coordinated rescue began, bringing together KWS, the Kenya Red Cross, the Kenya Fire Brigade NakuruKenya Police and ITARC Hospital staff.
The operation took several hours of careful maneuvering before rescuers finally reached Simiyu and took him to safety at around 3pm.
He broke his left leg and is currently stable and receiving treatment at the Naivasha County Referral Hospital.
Authorities have praised the cooperation, expertise and commitment shown by all involved, saying the successful rescue was a testament to the strength of coordination and composure under pressure.
Kenyans praise the KWS team
Kenyans took to social media to praise the walker’s rescue team as it turned an impending tragedy into a story of compassion and second chances.

Kamah Camelbak Sherpa
“The rescue team did, however, the guides a good job warning visitors about the dangers of Mount Longonot. Follow the path and take pictures everywhere.”
Kagondu Of Kariūki
“The hard part is not bringing him from the crater but getting him to the gate. Really hard work.”
As of the time of filing this report, Simiyu was admitted to a health center where he continues to receive treatment for his injuries.
