The nine lost their lives on November 26 in a fatal road accident while on their way to the village of Sango for the funeral of their grandmother, Mama Perpetua Tsivona.
The family was travelling, when they reached the area of Kijabe, Kiambu, the car carrying 15 passengers crashed and killed nine of them.
How did the Kakamega family receive the sad news?
The heartbroken mother, Irene Haron, recalled receiving a phone call that morning from her children, telling her they were on their way home for a funeral.
Elder Haron Tsivona, their father also remembered the time when he received a terrible call from the police informing him about the tragedy.
“At first, it was my children who called me, telling me they were about to reach Naivasha, and I remember telling them they would be home by four in the evening. We had gone to my mother’s and we were singing together, but about 15 minutes later, I received a call from an unknown number. It was the traffic police, who told me my family had been involved in an accident,” Elder Haron recalled.
The grieving parents explained how hearing that their children had perished in the accident made them very shocked and in disbelief.

Irene, still struggling to come to terms with the situation, said she was unable to speak.
“I don’t even know what to say. All nine of my children… they’re all gone,” she said, her voice shaking. “I can’t bear to think, and every time I do, I just shudder.”
The family is now looking for help to raise the money needed for their children’s funeral. They have set a budget of KSh 4.5 million, an amount they cannot raise alone.
Paulo Wawire, a relative of the family explained how his brother invested his life in raising and educating his children, hoping that one day they will be able to repay him by building him a better house.
“He spent all his years and money to train and send his children to school, and now, when they were about to start paying him, this tragedy happened. They had already planned to build a house for him,” Wawire said, his voice full of sadness.
Lugari MP Nabii Nabwera visited Mzee Haron’s family, and made a donation of KSh 1 million from the President William Ruto.
He also stressed the importance of widening the Nakuru-Nairobi road saying it can help prevent accidents and save more lives.
While the family plans to put their nine family members to rest, others who survived the accident have remained in the hospital, continuing to receive treatment for their injuries.
