Mbeere By-election: UDA’s Leonard Muthende Wins Narrow Victory over DP’s Karish

In a hotly contested by-election, United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate Leonard Muthende won the Mbeere North parliamentary seat.

Muthende, defeated Democratic Party (DP) candidate Newton Kariuki, popularly known as Karish with a landslide victory.

The results, officially announced at the Vote Tallying Center in Mbeere North constituency by election manager John Kinyua, revealed that Muthende got 15,802 votes, defeating Kariuki who had 15,308 votes.

The victory had a difference of only 494 votes, thus demonstrating the severity of the competition which witnessed Deputy President Kithure Kindiki and his predecessor Rigathi Gachagua camping in the constituency.

Other candidates in the race include Duncan Ireri Mbui of Chama Cha Kazi who got 2,480 votes, Lawrence Mwaneki Ireri of Safina Party who got 113 votes, Pastor Isaac Muringi of United Progressive Party who got 84 votes, Daniel Ireri Ngare of Kenya Moja Movement, who got 78 votes, Albert Ngare of National Murimii Vision 6, Simon na Maendeleo 3, Simon Murimi, Umoja wa Maendeleo 6, Pastor Isaac Muringi of the United Progressive Party. he got 18 votes.

The by-election attracted a large turnout, with 34,134 of the 55,124 registered voters casting their ballots, representing a voter participation rate of 61.92%.

“Therefore, the authority given by the Commission, and we have the Commissioner there and the Executive Director, we want to announce that Mr. Leo Wamuthende has been duly elected as the Member of Parliament for Mbeere North Constituency,” Kinyua said after completing the calculation.
