The flight that changed Fletcher Luzilili’s life

In a shocking interview on Shared Moments With Justushe returned to the memories of an episode that he would like to forget forever.

He faced a challenge finding his way after landing in Macau due to a language barrier, but was eventually able to get a ride to his hotel room.

When the mother of four children sat down to rest due to fatigue from the flight, there was a sudden knock on the door.

“I looked through the hole in the door and looked in and saw them waving police badges, so I opened the door,” he recalled.

Fletcher Luzilili explained about his “crime” When the noose clicked, the officers entered, going through his luggage as he struggled to understand what was going on.

Not a minute later, he found himself being ordered into the bathroom and told to undress.

The confused traveler was carried overhead to another location, interrogated for hours, and finally taken to a cell.

That’s when the gravity of his situation sunk in: he had been arrested.

The next morning, he was ushered into a room with cameras, his interview being broadcast live.

“I found out later that I was being accused of bringing drugs to Macau and exchanging the bag with an Indonesian dealer,” he said.

How long was Fletcher Luzilili’s imprisonment?

The charges surprised him.

He maintained his innocence, but the justice system had already rejected him.

Escorted from the court to the detention center, he came to realize that the center would be his home for many years.

After seven long months of waiting for the verdict, longing for freedom, the sentence came: 11 years in prison.

“My life passed before my eyes and all I could think about was my four children and my father, because Mother had already died,” Fletcher said.

How did Fletcher Luzilili cope?

The harsh reality of incarceration took years to settle.

After seven years, in 2021, he finally got to admit that he was in prison.

Eight and a half years into his sentence, his case was reopened.

In a rare case, he was acquitted on retrial, having already served most of the original sentence.

She left prison a free woman, although the world she returned to had changed while in prison.

Fletcher arrived home in Kenya on August 19, 2022.

He arrived with more than KSh 20,000 in old currency, only to discover that the country had changed its notes while he was out there.

Reuniting with family members was painful: he was free, but still sharing an interrupted life.

Shortly after his release, his father, who had promised to take care of his children until he returned, died.
