Boyd Were of the ODM party, the son of the slain former MP Ong’ondo Were, has been moving around the county, seeking to complete his father’s term.

However, the Were youth’s road to the August assembly will not be an easy one, facing Philip Aroko, an independent candidate and a seasoned politician.

Aroko’s departure from ODM and the decision to run alone has attracted voters who want a known leader outside the party structures, pushing the competition higher.

On Wednesday, November 19, the campaign of the budding politician was strengthened by many leaders from the Orange party led by the party leader and Siaya senator Oburu Oginga.

Oburu’s presence added strength to the contest as the party organized a large rally to mobilize support for the young politician.

How did Boyd’s mother impress the voters of Kasipul?

During the meeting, Homa Bay Town MP Opondo Kaluma invited Boyd’s mother to address the crowd.

His appearance drew a standing ovation as he walked up to the stage and gave a short but interesting message to the residents.

She spoke as a mother who had witnessed her son entering a fierce political competition while carrying the weight of his father’s legacy.

He used the time to remind residents of the late MP, saying that Boyd was in the best position to finish the work that had already begun.

“Today, I am asking you to vote for Boyd. I am asking you as a mother, and on the 27th, I am asking you to vote for Boyd so that he can continue the work that your honorable Member of Parliament (Ong’ondo Were) left,” he asked.

How Kenyans treated Boyd’s mother during the campaign

His speech sparked strong reactions among residents and Kenyans online, with many congratulating him on his statement.

Some supporters said the appearance showed the blended family’s commitment to the state.

However, others said that sentiment should not overshadow the need for effective leadership, questioning whether family appeals should influence political choices.

“Let’s make better decisions and let’s make people with selfless intentions and a desire to work for the people in leadership, not politicians who only care about their interests because others are used for political gain. Let’s do a thorough investigation and look carefully before choosing people because we have the power.”

Why IEBC fined Boyd, Aroko

Earlier, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission fined Aroko and Boyd KSh 1 million each after finding them to be involved in recent campaign violence.

The implementation committee of IEBC ruled that both men violated the scheduled campaign schedule, a move that led to violent clashes on November 6 in the Opondo area.

Two people died in the incident, several others were injured and properties were destroyed.
