Brian Rotich could not contain his grief after being informed about the sudden death of his girlfriend.

He had planned to marry Dorcas Cherono, but their wedding plans have now turned into funeral arrangements following her death.

When did Cherono, whom Rotich hoped to marry, die?

Rotich, who was on his way to visit his girlfriend’s parents, remembered receiving the terrible news.

“When it came to Sunday, November 16, the elder of the church followed me. He had been called the day before by his fellow elder of the church in Kericho where Cherono was worshiping, and he was told about the sad news.

“He told me there was something he wanted us to talk about right away. From his voice, I felt something was wrong, and I thought it might be related to the pre-wedding plans,” he told TUKO.co.ke.

Rotich expected to marry Cherono, aged 20, on Thursday, December 18, 2025, in their village Kipkelion, Kericho county.

When did Dorcas Cherono die?

He was doing the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exams for the year 2025 and planned to get married after finishing.

“The old man told me that my future wife is no longer there. I was confused, I was heartbroken, and I didn’t believe it. I called the elder of my girlfriend’s church to understand what happened. He told me that Cherono died on Saturday, November 15.

He was talking to young people, encouraging them to stick to Christ and his work. He said he was about to leave. No one understood what he meant. They thought he meant to go back home,” Rotich said.

He asked them to stand to sing together, which was his second last act of serving his God.

Cherono’s last words to the youth in the church

Cherono took a drum and started playing it while singing with the youth, not knowing that his heart would stop beating shortly after.

“Before entering the last period of praise and worship, he had told them about his wedding party that he was eagerly waiting for. He asked them if they were prepared; he repeated that question three times. Since he was in the group of praise and worship, he said he needed members of the praise and worship group.

“While they were singing fervently, Cherono suddenly fell on the altar. That was his last moment alive,” Rotich continued.

Where did Cherono study?

The 24-year-old said Cherono, who studied at Kipkelion Girls High School, was rushed outside and given first aid before being rushed to hospital.

In the health center, he was declared dead, which shocked his family, friends and fellow believers.

“Everything was ready for the wedding. We had spent KSh 100,000 on everything, starting from getting a car to transport the bride, the venue and everything else. Those things were kept at my grandfather’s house ready for the big day.

“I can’t sleep. I can’t think about getting married again. I’m overwhelmed with thoughts and I’m lost. I had seen her as my future wife. Now everything remains a dream, which has not come true,” he said sadly.
