According to the Mayo Clinic, leukemia affects blood-forming tissues in the body, including the bone marrow and lymphatic system.

Leukemia usually involves white blood cells, which normally help fight infection.

In this condition, the bone marrow produces too many abnormal white blood cells that cannot function properly.

The exact cause of leukemia is unknown, but genetic and environmental factors are thought to contribute. Changes in the DNA of blood cells can cause the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells, which can crowd out healthy blood cells.

Symptoms include persistent fatigue, unexplained weight loss, swollen lymph nodes, sweating and bone pain.
