Janet Mariachana has inspired many Kenyans with her enthusiasm to go back to school.
Why did Mariachana go back to school?
He had left the classroom for more than a decade, but that had not stopped him from reviving his educational journey.
The mother stopped going to school due to several challenges, but she returned and is now among the KCSE 2025 candidates.
“Life has been full of challenges, but now after giving birth, I thought it would be a good thing to go back to school to get my certificate because right now in Kenya, education is everything,” she said.
At the age of 29, Mariachana is a single mother of two who started school again after 11 years due to lack of tuition.

Before going to school, she makes sure she has prepared meals for her children for the whole day when they are on vacation since she comes home in the evening.
“When I am overwhelmed, I understand. Sometimes we can even just drink water, and my children understand, life goes on. I found it important to improve not only my life but also my children’s. During their school days, I prepare them when I prepare myself, and we leave together,” he said.
One resident praised Mariachana for working hard to balance school and motherhood despite the challenges she faces.

Kennedy Ondari, the principal of the school, said he understands Mariachana’s problems as a parent and a student.
“We understand that she is a mother, and she is very diligent in class. She has been attending classes,” he said.
Mariachana will be among the second last batch of high school students to sit the KCSE exams as the government plans to end the national exams soon.
The mother who dreams of becoming a doctor is hopeful that her efforts will bear fruit in the future.
