Speaking at the hospital at the time, Esther told TUKO.co.ke that there was a series of events that led to the false alarm.
“Immediately after giving birth, the health worker told me verbally that I had given birth to a boy. Still weak and confused after giving birth, I gave the same information to my husband without confirming it,” he said.
He explained that it was only after he rested that he realized that his happiness was a girl.
According to Mwaura, he asked for clarification because there was an obvious contradiction, but after looking at the records, he was satisfied that no child had been changed.

The young father said that a misunderstanding arose after the child was tagged with a blue wristband used for boys instead of the purple one used for girls.
On November 5, the couple returned to the hospital again, and this time, they got positive results indicating that the child they took home was theirs, as they had undergone DNA tests. When Mwaura was complaining on social media, many people suggested that he get a DNA test and not just take what he was told at face value.
“We will bring up the child with all the happiness, because we have determined that it is really ours,” said Mwaura.
“This is the first case that happened in our hospital in a long time, and therefore we took it seriously. We have taken steps to ensure that such incidents do not happen again,” said Peninah Mwikali, head of the center.
Mwaura smiled at the end, and so did the doctors.
