Elgeyo Marakwet: More than 20 People Die in Kerio Valley Mudslides

More than 20 people are feared dead and several houses destroyed following mudslides that occurred in Chesongoch, Elgeyo Marakwet.

It is reported that the disaster occurred after the Enoow River broke its banks due to heavy rains that fell in parts of the country, passing through houses and leaving a trail of destruction.

In a statement, the Minister of Internal Affairs Dating Murkomen confirmed the tragic incident, revealing that rescue operations are ongoing.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Endo, Sambirir, and Embobut Wards in Marakwet East following the massive landslides that have resulted in deaths and loss of property, as well as damage to infrastructure, including the road network. The government has dispatched police and military helicopters carrying medical personnel and Red Cross personnel to assist in the ongoing search and rescue operations. We are working with the County Government and non-governmental actors to respond to this terrible event and provide the necessary support for the affected families. Efforts are underway to restore the damaged road network to facilitate movement and access for emergency and relief operations,” he said.
