Tanzanian Election: Hussein Mwinyi of CCM Re-Elected as President of Zanzibar

On Thursday, October 30, the Zanzibar Electoral Commission (ZEC) issued a statement, announcing Mwinyi’s landslide victory.

According to the BBC SwahiliZEC chairman George Joseph Kazi said that Mwinyi, the candidate of the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM), got 74.8 percent of the total votes cast, defeating ten opposition candidates.

Voter turnout reached an impressive 88 percent in the semi-independent islands, reflecting strong public participation in one of the region’s most closely watched elections.

Mwinyi’s victory extends CCM’s uninterrupted reign in Zanzibar politics since independence.

His re-election strengthens the ownership of the ruling party on the mainland and islands at a time when the national results of Tanzania they still count.

Mwinyi promises unity and reform

In a speech broadcast live shortly after the official announcement, Mwinyi sounded a conciliatory note.

He called for unity among political opponents and asked all parties to prioritize the interests of the nation.

“Let’s forget the past and open a new chapter to rebuild the islands,” he said, emphasizing his desire to defend reforms.

Surrounded by the First Lady Mariam Mwinyi, the president thanked the voters for their trust and reaffirmed his commitment to strengthen the administration and increase the growth of Zanzibar.

The country’s leader said his second term would focus on strengthening the achievements made during his first administration.

Mwinyi, who took power for the first time in 2020, will now lead the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar for another five years.

Chama Cha Mapinduzi, which has never lost a presidential election in Zanzibar or mainland Tanzania, seems ready to maintain control nationally as well.

Preliminary results from the Tanzania Electoral Commission (INEC) show that CCM’s presidential candidate, Samia Solution Hassanleading in most areas counted so far.
