Otiende Amollo Explains How The Government Is Undermining Parliament’s Power: “It’s Letting Kenyans Down”

Nairobi – Rarieda Member of Parliament Otiende Amollo has expressed his opinion about the broad government led by the President William Ruto.

Speaking on Spice FM on Wednesday, October 22, Otiende said the working arrangement between ODM and United Democratic Alliance (UDA) parties is good for promoting integration in the country.

However, Otiende lamented that the broad arrangement has reduced scrutiny of government bills and policies in the National Assembly.

Is broad-based government good?

According to the MP, although the ODM contract with UDA it is good for national unity, it unwittingly weakens the management of the parliament.

“I can tell you that although broad government is a good thing for this country, one of the unexpected effects it has had on Parliament is to reduce the level of scrutiny and opposition to bills that may not be good,” Go away he said.

The smart MP pointed out that ODM MPs who question certain government proposals and laws are often accused of being against the broader agenda.

Otiende recalled how he has often been called a baseless government for opposing certain laws in parliament.

“Some of us who question this are said to be against the broad government, but we are not. I am one, for example, because I ask questions during the debate, and some people have concluded that I am one of those who oppose it,” he said.

The MP for Rarieda warned that the Kenyan Parliament is increasingly losing its independence in matters of law.

How is the Kenyan Parliament weakened?

Otiende accused the Executive of hijacking legislative processes for political convenience and fraud.

For example, Otiende said several MPs opposed the complex cybercrime laws in Parliament, but the government side had many MPs supporting the bill.

“When the law of Internet errors was discussed, some of us opposed it, but in Parliament, the “mood of the House” often decides. When the speaker asks a question, the majority wins, right or wrong, and the opposing voices are drowned in that wave,” he noted.

He also pointed out that there is currently no agreement between ODM and UDA regarding supporting Ruto’s bid for re-election.

“We joined a broad government, which, like any other, has a five-year term ending in 2027. We will support it for its duration. Until his death, Raila had not mentioned what will happen after 2027,” the MP said.
