Meteorologist Issues Heavy Rain Warning for 8 Days in Several Counties

• On Wednesday, October 22, the Kenya Meteorological Department issued a warning of heavy rain and flooding
• The meteorologist released a list of specific counties that will receive increased rainfall between October 23 and 30
• The Department of Meteorology also highlighted some measures that Kenyans in the affected areas should take into account in the allotted time

Nairobi – The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued an advisory regarding heavy rain in several areas in the country.

In a notice issued on Wednesday, October 22, the weather forecaster said that the advisory lasts for eight days, starting on Thursday, October 23, and ending on October 30.

Which counties will experience heavy rain?

According to the advisory, the rain currently falling in the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, and the Western Highlands of the Rift Valley is expected to increase to more than 30mm in 24 hours.

“The rains that are currently affecting parts of the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley and the Western Highlands of the Rift Valley are expected to increase to more than 30mm in 24 hours and spread to the Eastern Highlands of the Rift Valley (including Nairobi) and the Southeast Lowlands from Thursday, October 23, 2025.

Heavy rains are expected to continue and spread to the North-Eastern parts from October 30, 2025, indicating the likely Onset of OND 2025 Short Rains in many areas,” Kenya Met said.

Counties in the affected areas include PoisonousHomabay, Siaya, Migori, Busia, Kisii, Nyamira, Nandi, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Narok, Baringo, Nakuru, Trans-Nzoia, Uasin-Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet and West Pokot.

The other counties are Kiambu, Tharaka-Nithi, Kajiado, Machakos, Makueni, Meru, Embu Murang’a, Kirinyaga, Nyeri, Laikipia, Nyandarua, Wajir, Mandara, Marsabit, Isiolo, Samburu and Turkana.

The meteorologist has advised residents in affected counties to be alert for flooding and landslides, avoid walking or driving through moving water, and stay away from fields and trees during the storm.

Motorists and pedestrians are advised to avoid moving water due to the risk of flooding and to stay away from fields and trees during thunderstorms.

“Residents in all the mentioned areas are advised to be careful of possible floods. Flood waters may occur in areas where it has not rained much, especially downstream. People are advised to avoid driving or walking in moving water, open fields, and not to hide under trees and near burnt windows to reduce the possibility of being affected by lightning strikes.”
