Wilson Wambugu said his problems started several years ago after an argument with a cousin of the family who had hired him as a farm boy in Nyeri.

Speaking to Simon Kibe’s Jamba TV, Wambugu said his quarrel with the cousin started when he refused to buy him alcohol.

“I was getting KSh 6,000 as a salary, and I was spending about KSh 5,000 on my mother’s medicines, while the remaining KSh 1,000 was for my personal harm. And that’s why I couldn’t buy him the drinks he wanted. I told him I could buy him a cup of tea, but he insisted he wanted alcohol,” the prisoner claimed.

The inmate claimed his refusal to buy the man alcohol sparked a row that culminated in his arrest later that day, and an 80-year prison sentence.

“After saying that I am powerless, he told me that I will face you. And that evening he came accompanied by a police officer and accused me of having sex with his teenage cousins. However, the victims strongly denied that I hurt them because I do not even know their names, because I was just a shy young man,” he claimed.

The prisoner claimed that the three young men were forced to give false evidence against him, but they continued to insist that it was a lie.

He was later arrested on those charges and was slapped 80 times in July 2025, and his second taste of freedom is 2076.

“I didn’t do it. Even the victims said I didn’t do it. I’m innocent,” he claimed.

“It’s hard in here. To think that I’m supposed to be here until the year 2076 breaks me. Even many family members don’t know that I’m in prison. It’s very hard,” he added.

Wambugu said he has met all kinds of people in prisons, some convicted of crimes like him.

“I will leave prison at the age of 81. How will I succeed? My whole life will be here. I even tried to plead with the judge because I knew I was innocent,” he added.
