Internal disputes have emerged over party direction, mourning etiquette and succession planning.
Saboti Member of Parliament Caleb Amisi has expressed his deep concern about the behavior of some ODM leaders, criticizing their frequent appearances in the media during what he described as a heavy period of national mourning.
Did Amisi accuse Wanga of appearing in the media?
Amisi specifically questioned the timing and tone of the press briefings held by top officials of the party, including the national chairman of the party, Governor Gladys Wangaarguing that the focus shifted early from honoring Raila’s legacy to advocating for a broader government agenda.
“Why are Wanga and company so active politically after the death of Baba? What happened to the period of mourning? Why are all in the media spreading ethnic enmity between the democratic community and other communities?
Since Baba is dead, are they entering into wider politics than Raila’s life? Even if Father leaves you wide, why do you defend it more than the owners and MPs of UDA? Why? Why? Why? Why is the death of such a wonderful person in our country taken lightly by the leaders he raised?” he questioned.
In a statement full of strong emotions, Amisi went on to accuse the leaders of alienating loyal members like him, the Nairobi senator Edwin Sifunaand Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino—leaders whom Raila claimed to have supported in his political journey.
Furthermore, the flamboyant member of parliament expressed dismay at what he saw as the push to discuss the party’s legacy with future presidential candidates, suggesting that such discussions were disrespectful to Raila’s memory.
“Why are you considering the future of ODM, its presidential candidate, etc., more than mourning the death of the founder, Raila? Why are you in a hurry to expel leaders like Caleb, Sifuna and Babu from ODM? Whom Baba did not expel, but loved them? Why talk about Baba’s legacy happily on his last day of honor,” he said.
He called for reflection and national revival, while asking leaders to prioritize unity and respect over political maneuvering.
Why did Malala warn Wanga?
Echoing Amisi’s comments, the deputy leader of the Democratic Party for the People (DCP) Cleophas Malala criticized the hasty move to appoint Senator Oburu Oginga, Raila’s brother, as the interim leader of the party.

Malala questioned the urgency of the change, claiming that it undermined the seriousness of the mourning period and risked politicizing Raila’s death.
“Why are you taking advantage of Raila’s death to politicize everything? People are looking at you. They are asking you why you want to oppress the young leaders of Raila, who have been holding the party together. You and your boss want to expel those young leaders from the party because you have been promised rewards for destroying it. You are not true, and we call them. Raila, do not abuse death.” Malala warned.

This concern comes following controversial remarks by Nyeri governor Mutahi Kahiga, whose comments appeared to celebrate Raila’s death.
Kahiga’s statements caused strong reactions, with calls for his arrest and prosecution from leaders, including Kisii governor Simba Arati.
In response, Wanga drew a clear line between real ODM members and those he described as opponents of the party, especially people from the Mt Kenya area.
How long will Raila’s mourning period last?
Meanwhile, Raila’s mourning period may go beyond the traditional 40 days, especially among the Luo community.
According to former deputy minister David Osiany, this period serves as an important time for reflection and remembrance.
During this time, family, friends, and supporters, including high-ranking officials, are expected to continue to visit his home, share memories, sing his favorite songs, and affirm his legacy.
