The situation, the MCAs claim, has been caused by the young people using illegal alcohol excessively.

Why are Trans Nzoia youths afraid to take a shower?

According to MCA of Sitatunga Simon Murei ward, young people in Trans Nzoia have been exposed to easily available illegal alcohol made on the streets using ethanol suspected to be smuggled into the country through the Suam border.

“Seven Mile area is now worse than Sodom and Gomorrah. Our young people no longer bathe because they are afraid of water after drinking illegal alcohol,” Murei said.

Murei also questioned the criteria used to license liquor outlets across the region. He called for the cancellation of current licenses to pave the way for a re-inspection of all liquor outlets.

“We need a thorough inspection to be done in all those ingredients. Surprisingly, they are all licensed, and the liquor has KEBS stamps,” he noted.

A similar opinion was expressed by MCA of Motosiet ward Jackline Kurgat, who complained that several young people have died due to the consumption of the illegal alcohol.

He warned that, if the relevant authorities fail to act and eradicate the menace as soon as possible, an entire generation could be destroyed.

“In this area, several people have died. In fact, we will bury more. We have already done fundraising to support the burial of other victims,” Kurgat said.

“If our boys die, who will marry our girls? It means we will not have children, and that is very dangerous,” he added.

The MCAs, including Kaplamai’s Daniel Mosbei, called for a crackdown and the arrest of all those involved in the sale of ethanol used to make the dangerous alcohol before it gets worse.
