Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga is under fire due to the hate speech he made about the death of the former prime minister Raila Odinga.

As a result of that situation, netizens have started ‘greeting’ him after his number was leaked online.
He switched off his line after the number went viral, as attempts to call the number confirmed it.
Netizens shared screenshots of the texts they had sent to Mutahi following the careless remarks.
What did Mutahi Kahiga say about Raila’s death?
At the funeral ceremony on Tuesday, October 21, 2025, Mutahi claimed that Raila’s death was a form of divine intervention meant to redirect development and government resources in the Mt Kenya region.
He claimed that there is a close working relationship between Odinga and the President William Ruto caused the government’s attention and resources to be directed to Odinga’s Nyanza area at the expense of Mount Kenya.
He further pointed out that Odinga’s death leveled the playing field, causing all political actors to return to the board before the 2027 General Election.
“The plan that was woven, if you look carefully, for those of you who don’t travel because I was in that region, everything good was directed there because of tomorrow’s plans, because it seemed like they finished us but God came and brought this thing.”
“So now people have been told to go back to the drawing board because the existing plan was probably to throw us away. But who is God? Does he take ugali to someone’s house or does he sleep in Kayole? He went through it his own way. He saw in heaven that people are very different and he came to Baba to smooth things over there,” Kahiga said.

Kenyans criticized him and sent their warnings to his WhatsApp number.
“When politics reaches the stage of celebrating death, it is no longer leadership. It is pure evil disguised as honesty. Kenya deserves leaders with humanity, not hate. Shame on you. Shame on you,” the leaked WhatsApp message read.

What action did the governors take after Mutahi Kahiga’s statement of indifference?
In a separate article, the Council of Governors (CoG) convened an emergency meeting on Wednesday, October 22.
The CoG chairman Ahmed Abdullahi, who is Kahiga’s deputy, expressed deep disappointment with the governor’s remarks in a strongly worded statement, calling them “reckless, careless, sad and luck bad.”
He added that the late politician’s legacy is deeply rooted in Kenyan history and called it “barbaric and unacceptable” to commemorate Raila’s death for alleged political reasons.
