Raila’s death, which came unexpectedly, plunged the country into deep mourning as Kenyans and international leaders paid tribute to the brilliant statesman and politician.

The comments made during national mourning and just a few days after Raila’s burial, sparked many criticisms from leaders and citizens alike.

Speaking during the funeral in Kieni on Tuesday, October 21, Kahiga made comments that appeared to celebrate the death of the former opposition leader.

He pointed out that Raila’s death was a divine intervention as his presence ‘complicated’ development plans in some regions including Nyeri county.

Why was the CoG upset by Kahiga’s remarks?

In a strongly worded statement, CoG chairman Ahmed Abdullahi, who is Kahiga’s deputy, expressed deep disappointment with the governor’s remarks, describing them as “sloppy, careless, sad, and unfortunate.”

“The Council of Governors wants to dissociate itself from the sentiments of Governor Kahiga and note that these are personal statements that do not reflect or represent the views of the council, especially at this time of great mourning,” Abdullahi said in his statement.

He further explained that it is ‘barbaric and unacceptable’ to celebrate Raila’s death based on political ideas, adding that the legacy of the deceased is deeply rooted in the history of Kenya.

Abdullahi went on to say that “Raila was and will forever remain a politician whose contributions are embedded in the annals of Kenyan history. He was not only the architect and father of devolution but also its chief protector and staunch supporter.”

Abdullahi added that he has called an emergency extra session of the Council to discuss the matter.

“Due to the above, I have called an emergency Council meeting to be held tomorrow morning to discuss these sad remarks and more information will follow,” he added.
