Why Raila received a 17 cannon salute
In military tradition, the number of shots fired is determined by the rank or status of the dignitary.
The 17-gun salute is a rare honor reserved for retired prime ministers, vice presidents, or senior military officers of special rank.
Raila qualified for this distinction as the former prime minister of Kenya between 2008 and 2013, a role that placed him among the highest positions in the national leadership.
Above the leadership is a 21-gun salute, Kenya’s highest military honor, reserved for a sitting head of state, symbolizing supreme authority and national independence.
Below is a 19-gun salute, given to retired presidents or senior officials who once held that office.
Raila’s widow, Ida Odingawith family members, laid a wreath on his casket while military officers folded the national flag and handed it over to the family, a mark of honor and respect for his service to Kenya.
