Kalonzo, who has stood by Raila in many political battles, expressed his sorrow and respect for the ODM leader, reflecting on their journey together in Kenyan politics.
Kalonzo joined Raila for the first time in 2013, when he put aside his dreams of running for the presidency and became Raila’s running mate.
The two leaders collaborated again in the 2017 election, where Kalonzo was also Odinga’s running mate.
Their cooperation led to an important case in the Supreme Court challenging the results of the presidential election, a step that changed the political history of Kenya.
Even after he was not selected as Raila’s running mate in the 2022 elections, Kalonzo continued to support Raila in his presidential bid, showing true loyalty to his political friend and mentor.
Like many Kenyans, Kalonzo was shocked by the news of Raila’s death.
He was at Heathrow Airport, London, preparing for a 10-day flight, when he received the sad news.
He immediately stopped his trip and returned to Kenya to attend the Mass for the dead and Raila’s funeral, a sign of his great respect and love for his friend.
After attending the mass, Kalonzo posted a condolence message on Facebook, expressing his grief and respect for Raila.
His touching message showed not only personal grief, but also the impact that Raila had on Kenya and the African continent as a whole.
Kalonzo wrote:
“Rest in eternal peace, my brother Mr. Raila Amolo Odinga. Your voice carried the dreams of millions, and your heart carried the burden of our nation’s journey. Kenya, Africa and the whole world will remember you forever. Your legacy will live in every heart that believes in the promise of a just and united nation.”
Kalonzo’s words touched many, leading Kenyans to congratulate him for his loyalty to Raila throughout the years.
Some comments from citizens are as follows:
