Kenyan Newspapers: Ruth Odinga Reveals What Happened, Last Events Until Raila Dies

Daily newspapers reported why Raila’s elder brother, Oburu Oginga, was appointed interim leader of the ODM Party.

1. The Star

Ruth Odinga, his younger sister Raila Odingahas revealed the last moments of the former prime minister before his death.

According to Ruth, who is also a representative of the women of PoisonousRaila was hoping to return on Thursday, October 16.

He is one of the close relatives who traveled with Raila to India for treatment. Winnie OdingaRaila’s youngest daughter, was also there.

The ODM Party leader looked happy, relaxed, and casually dressed in photos that were sent from India earlier this week.

Ruth revealed that Raila was in a retreat center on Wednesday, October 15, living with close family members following his medical examination, and not in hospital.

According to him, Raila made great progress and was preparing to return home.

“We weren’t even at the hospital; we were just at the rest center where we were staying before our return on Thursday, October 16. He was fine, he was doing his usual walk and we had to go back,” he remembered.

Ruth said the 80-year-old veteran politician looked cheerful as he went for his daily walk at 8:30 am.

“He didn’t fall. He just sat down and said he was feeling tired. After thinking it was just tired from walking, we called an ambulance,” he narrated.

After being taken by ambulance to Devamatha Hospital in Kerala, where medical professionals tried to save his life, Raila passed away at 9:52 am.

After Raila collapsed during a morning walk in Kerala, India, on Wednesday, his last moments were dominated by attempts to save his life.

Dr Alphons, a cardiologist at Devamatha Hospital, revealed that Raila was admitted at around 8:30am (6am Kenyan time).

Before rushing him to the hospital, where medical experts began CPR, his personal assistant, Maurice Ogolla, and his doctor performed CPR.

“He had no palpable pulse or blood pressure when he was admitted. The patient remained unconscious even after we tried other measures and continued CPR,” the doctor explained.

In the intensive care unit, doctors briefly detected a weak pulse, but the former prime minister’s condition worsened.

The doctor confirmed that he had kidney disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, and a history of deep vein thrombosis.

3. The Standard

The publication reported that as soon as Raila’s remains were returned to Kenya, mourners began gathering in hotels and public places on Thursday, October 16, in the morning.

Across the nation, the situation was similar in many cities. The gray edges of the gloomy morning mingled with the sadness of sad locals and closed shops.

This is happening while the country is suffering from the turmoil of the loss of a titan who ruled its political sphere.

The people of Kisumu and Bondo, Siaya, cried and sang Luo mourning songs as they saw the body of their son covered in Kenyan colors in grief.

The publication reported why the ODM Party named Raila’s brother, Oburu Oginga, as the party’s interim leader.

In the midst of national mourning, the ODM National Central Committee (NEC) announced the new boss in Nairobi after a meeting to mourn the leader of the party and plan a way forward.

Oburu will serve as party chief until he is elected by ODM’s higher bodies.

Oburu turned 82 on the day his younger brother passed away.

The NEC said the decision was prompted by the need for stability, unity and continuity.
