Siaya Senator Oburu Oginga has officially announced the death of the former prime minister Raila Odinga to residents and family members who are mourning at his home in Opoda Farm, Bondo.

The announcement came on Thursday, October 16, after Raila’s body arrived in Kenya from India, where he died suddenly while being treated.
How was Oburu Oginga received at Raila’s house?
When he arrived BondoOburu was received with great sadness.
Residents erupted in mourning as family members escorted him to Raila’s home, following the Luo tradition of tero ywak, which requires a silent entry into the home of the deceased.
The senator went in without saying a word until he got home.
Inside, Oburu addressed the gathered mourners, describing the circumstances of Raila’s last days.
What caused the death of Raila Odinga?
He revealed that Raila has been suffering from blood clotting and was receiving steroids to treat the area which caused extreme fatigue.
The family chose to send him to India for rest and treatment using traditional medicine.
“He was just resting,” Oburu said. “We arranged for him to travel to Dubai on Friday October 17, where I met him, on Wednesday morning, October 15, he was healthy and even went for a walk with Winnie. But the illness hit him suddenly and very much. The doctors tried to revive him, but it didn’t work. He was taken to the ICU, and that’s where he died. That’s what God planned. Jakom has left us, and I pray that we give him a peaceful burial.”

Following consultation with the family’s lawyer, Raila’s family agreed to begin the traditional mourning of 72 hours from the time Raila’s body arrived in Kenya.
He will be buried on Sunday, October 19, at his father’s house in Bondo.
“He will be buried next to our mother and father … and we welcome visitors,” he added.
