The suspect, identified as Chrisantus, was arrested after a video was circulated on social media showing him as he waved the head of the statue cut through the Central Nairobi Business District (CBD).

Why did Chrisantus destroy the statue of Dedan Kimathi?

Rodriques Mulindi, Nairobi Governor’s Protocol Officer Johnson Sakajahe said he and others saw the man carrying heavy sacks and decided to follow him.

“We saw the man carrying heavy sacks. When interviewed, he claimed that he found the statue down,” Mulindi said.

In the following video circulated by Mulindi, the suspect admitted to committing the offense, admitting that he broke the statue in the garden of Uhuru Park with the intention of selling it as scrap metal.

“I am a thief. I went into the garden of freedom and broke the statue of Dedan Kimathi. He said.

Mulindi continued to interview the suspect about how he was able to reach the garden and warn him against entering Green Park, Uhuru Park, or Central Park in the future.

“There is a special unit formed by the Deputy Inspector General of Police called the anti -destruction force. We contacted them, and the suspect is now in detention at the police station,” Mulindi added.

The authorities confirmed that the suspect would be brought to court on Monday, October 13.

The statue of Dedan Kimathi has stood for many years as a symbol of the power to fight for Kenya’s independence, commemorating the legacy of the Mau Mau leader who opposed the British colonial rule.

The act of destruction has sparked a new call for the strengthening of the protection of national monuments and historical symbols.
