Faith Odhiambo: LSK President surrenders, withdraws from the victim’s compensation panel

His action comes just a few weeks after his appointment by the President William Rutoa move that led to criticism in legal circles and a call to replace him with the Kenyan Law Society (LSK).

When did Faith Odhiambo resign?

In a public statement issued on Monday, October 6, Odhiambo confirmed his departure, saying:

“So, today I have issued a letter of my official resignation and immediately from the position of Vice -Chairman of the Expert Committee on payments to victims of protests and public strikes to the Head of Public Service,” He said.

The committee, officially launched on August 25, 2025, was tasked with developing a system to compensate the victims of police violations during last protest.

Odhiambo described the committee as a group of prominent Kenyans who had the intention of respecting human rights and the rule of law.

He viewed the role as an opportunity to improve poor legal and institutional systems in Kenya involving compensation for victims.

Why did Faith Odhiambo resign?

According to him, the resignation action reminds him of the growing fears about the effectiveness of the committee.

He revealed that legal challenges had suspended its activities, and since the 120 days of the committee were closed by the court, Odhiambo said that the goals that require immediate implementation could not be achieved.

The victims, he said, keep in touch angrily, not knowing when their cases will be heard.

“It is impossible to achieve the steps I promised to address,” He said, adding that he would now focus on his work through the Kenya Law Society (LSK).

Odhiambo emphasized that his decision was supported by his oath to protect the integrity of Lsk and Constitutional Reform efforts in Kenya.

He called for solidarity among the legal institutions and confirmed his commitment to defend victims of police violence.

The LSK president set up a system of compensation for victims with four key goals: memorial and recognition of the victims, compensation for victims and their families, refers to and returned to the community including torture cases, and institutional reforms to prevent future violations.

“I believe that if the same efforts were put to the success of this alternative, positive results for victims are still possible,” He said.

Did Odhiambo defend himself about his appointment on the Compensation Committee?

Elsewhere, following his appointment to the committee, Odhiambo faced allegations of abusing Kenyan after accepting the position.

During his oath, he defended himself and promised transparency, constant public information, and unstable commitment to justice and evolution.

He described a specialist committee as an important opportunity to create a compensation system based on the victim.
