The award was announced on Wednesday, September 24, during a high -level table on adequate and affordable housing at the 80th UN General Assembly (UNA) meeting in New York, accepted the Kenyan leadership in addressing the global housing crisis.

“President Ruto is recognized by UN-HABITAT as an international housing champion for all, recognizing Kenya’s leadership in tackling the challenge of housing,” he said.

During a meeting that brought together 25 countries, development partners, local banks, and UN officials, Ruto proposed the formation of a coalition of international housing champions.

He described the forum as a high -level political movement of single -minded leaders who will defend reform and integrated housing policies.

The president also called on nations to hang housing in their national development strategies, combining the goals of sustainable development, climate tolerance, and social equality.

He emphasized that the house should not be considered as a result, but as the main pillar of human dignity and economic development.

Ruto emphasized the need for predictable and increased funding, calling for greater support for UN-HABITAT and extensive cooperation with financial institutions.

He called on the government to pass the creative examples of funding that reflects the magnitude of the challenge.

“Without adequate and predictable funding, adequate and affordable housing will remain out,” Ruto commented.

The head of state further called on coalitions that unite government, cities, private investors, and communities to change housing from expectations to reality.

He reminded members of the UN’s ongoing plans such as resolution 2/2 about changing informal housing and “building climate and poor urban planning,” which Kenya and Brazil lead.

How are cheap housing in Kenya?

Ruto highlighted Kenya’s cheap housing program as a real example of his government’s commitment.

He revealed that the country is aimed at the delivery of 200,000 houses annually, explaining that the plan is more housing but also the engine for creating work spaces, urban renewal and equality.

The president said that around 170,000 units are under construction, producing around 320,000 jobs.

That number, according to Ruto, will grow up to approximately 650,000 in the coming weeks as projects increase.

In order to run the ability to afford, Ruto noted that the government has provided public land to developers and set up tax incentives to reduce construction costs.

He added that the recently enacted home -made laws of 2024 and housing tariffs will fund housing improvement and improve access to funds.

Kenya Mortgage Refinance is also expanding access to housing loans, making it possible for low and middle -income owners to own a home.

“Our success will not be measured by the promises we make, but to the communities we raise, the roofs we lift, and the respect we bring back. The house should not be a few opportunity. It must be a reality for all,” he told the meeting.
