Siaya: 382 health care workers dismissed for alleged fraud in recruitment, governor Orengo speaking

The Siaya County government suspended 382 health care workers allegedly to get a job using fake employment records.

The major move followed a detailed audit of the County Public Service Board in collaboration with the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI).

The investigation was fueled by complaints from more than 500 people who said they had not received salaries for several months.

Investigators discovered errors in selection records, including deployment letters that were placed earlier than official selection letters.

Some of the affected workers, however, emphasized that they had been employed properly, completed the trial, and carried out their duties faithfully for several months, even free of charge.

In addition to fake documents, allegations of corruption rapidly emerged. One source told TUKO.co.ke that many dismissed health workers were allegedly paid between KSh 300,000 and 500,000 to get a job.

What did Orengo say about the dismissal of county staff?

On Thursday, September 18, the governor James Orengo He spoke of the scandal with harsh words.

He confirmed receipt of applications from the victims, including September 15 and another presented to the Siaya County Parliament.

“I have received requests from several people, expressing their concerns for allegedly dismissed by the Siaya County government from services in the health department. A similar request has also been submitted to the Siaya County parliament,” He said.

The governor stressed that he would not interfere with the ongoing investigation but called on the investigative agencies and Parliament to monitor the matter in detail.

“I urge all of them to conduct a thorough investigation and expose this fraud to the way it is. Orengo assured residents that his government would fully comply with the law and implement the proposals that may arise.

Cursing reports of corruption, the governor noted that the scandal had already defiled the county image.

The county commissioner acknowledged the existence of the violence and called on the county legislature to take immediate action.

“I know that the Siaya people are upset about the issue, and I urge the county parliament to conclude the issue for two weeks instead of one month,” He said.

Orengo further promised that his administration would not protect any criminals. Instead, he said the scandal should signal a change in accountability in Siaya’s public service.
