Martha Koome Ageguni and agony following the death of an appeals court judge: “Great Sadness”

“On behalf of the Judicial Department and the Judicial Services Commission, I sadly report the reports of the death of Mr. Judge Fredrick Ochieng Andago, Judge of the Kenyan Appeal Court. Said Koome.

Ochieng joined the court in 2003 as a Supreme Court Judge, where he served respectfully in various units, including the civil affairs unit, Kitale, Kakamega, Criminal Unit, Business and Marine Transportation Unit, and Kisumu.

In 2022, he was promoted to the Court of Appeal. He will continue to be remembered as a prominent leader in the development of trade laws in Kenya and as a major advocate for alternative conflict resolution methods.

At the time of his death, he was serving as chairman of the trial arbitration task force, which promotes national implementation of the mediation.

Before joining the court, he had a prestigious profession as a high court attorney at Kaplan & Stratton Advocates for almost two decades.

“We are working together with his family, friends and the whole judicial community during this difficult period of mourning. We ask for compassion and personality as we share these collective sadness,” Added Koome.

Ochieng’s death occurred one year after the deaths of two other senior judges.

In July last year, the Chief Justice of the Siaya High Court, Daniel Ogembo, was found dead in a residential house in Siaya.

According to his close assistant, Ogembo had complained about unknown health problems on Tuesday evening after work.

The next morning he could not be found by phone, which raised concerns for his driver, who discovered the judge’s death on Wednesday morning, July 17, after breaking the door of the house.

The driver had gone to pick him up to work. Police took his body and took it to the mortuary of the Siaya County Referral Hospital for a corpse examination.

The governor of Siaya, James Orengohe referred to Ogembo as “a strong court lawyer capable of listening carefully and using a few words to bring transparency in court.”

Ogembo, who had a law degree (LLB) and a Master’s degree (LLM) in international studies, both from the University of Nairobi, joined the judiciary in 2004 and rose to the Supreme Court Judge in 2016 after serving as a judge.

He served in the Nairobi High Courts, Eldoret And Siaya.

Ogembo’s death occurred just a week after the death of Judge David Majanja. Majanja died on Wednesday, July 10, while receiving treatment at Nairobi Hospital, where he was undergoing surgery.

Prior to his death, Majanja was serving in the mountainous civilian unit.

He had been re -elected as a member of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC), representing the Association of Judges and Judges of Kenya (KMJA).

Prior to his re -election, Judge Majanja was the chairman of the human resource management committee and was also a member of the Audit, Administration and Risk Management Committee as well as the Training and Development Committee.

The death of Majanja occurred just weeks after the death of the Chief Justice of the Court of Makadara, Monicah Kivuti.

He died of injuries after being shot by police officer, Samson Kipruto, who reportedly shot himself later.
