Victor Wanyama on Why He Remains Humble Despite His Successful Career

Former Harambee Stars captain Victor Wanyama has explained why he has never allowed fame to get into his head despite enjoying a great playing career.

Victor Wanyama is one of Kenya’s most successful footballers but he goes about his business without much fanfare.

Wanyama is the only Kenyan to have played in the English Premier League following his spells with Southampton and Tottenham Hotspur and also enjoyed success at Scottish giants Celtic before later playing in the MLS for CF Montreal.

However, Wanyama has remained humble throughout his career, choosing to let his football do the talking, unlike others who would been all over the place if they were in a similar position.

Wanyama says his humility is not just because he respects everyone irrespective of their standing in society but is also driven by the need to have a happy retirement when he hangs up his boots.

“Yes, football can make you famous but one thing you should never forget is you are just human as everyone else,” Wanyama said on Citizen TV.

What Keeps Wanyama Grounded?

“There is no difference between you and the other ordinary person. The respect [for everyone] has to be there and when you have that, the day you stop playing, it will be very easy for you to interact with everyone.

“But if you feel special and stop interacting with others, because you feel famous, when you finish your career, it will be so difficult. People will despise you,” he added.

Wanyama has played in some of the world’s most prestigious competitions such as the Champions League, brushing shoulders with the best players in the globe, and was never afraid to take them on.

The midfielder is now in the twilight years of his career but his humility and discipline still make him an attractive prospect for teams besides his well-known talent.

Wanyama is currently a free agent after leaving Scottish second tier club Dunfermline Athletic, who he played for on a short-term deal from March 2025 until the end of last season.
