The organizers, supported by the leading board, the African Football Federation (CAF), have promised an exciting football festival.
On Saturday, August 2, at Benjamin Mkapa National Stadium, the first whistle will go for the start of the African Nations (CHAN) 2024 Championship.
But there is something still not adding to many fans and a new person in the same game.
From all the advertising features with CAF, to the title on the field, to our stories on TUKO.co.ke, we have used Chan 2024.
“Chan 2024?” I hear you ask, “Why, we are still 2025? In fact, we are closer 2026 than 2024.”
No, it’s not a writing mistake. It’s Chan 2024. That’s the right name for a tournament that will be popular in August.
This is the reason.
Why is it called CHAN 2024 and we are taking place 2025?
This year’s edition was to be held in September 2024, but it was postponed because of the controversial football calendar.
At an Exco session held in Nairobi in September last year, CAF President Patrice Motsepe confirmed that the tournament was postponed until February 2025.
Typically, when sports competitions are postponed to a different year, they save the year that should have been done before.
Competition that preserved the original names despite being postponed
This happened widely in 2021 and in the following years after the main tragedy Covid-19 which is about to end the world in 2020.
The Euro Championship was scheduled to take place in June that year. When it was finally held in 2021, it still saved the name of the Euro 2020, which Italy won after scoring England.
Later that year, Tokyo organized the summer Olympics after being delayed for a year but still used Tokyo 2020.
Other examples include Afcon 2021, which took place in early 2022. In addition to Covid, this was also due to concerns about Cameroon climate in mid -2021.
The same climate prevented Ivory Coast from making AFCON 2023 in mid -2023 as planned. Instead it was held in early 2024, but it was still known as AFCON 2023.
Thus, Chan 2024 is the official name that Kenya is preparing together. Not Chan 2025.

Why was Chan 2024 postponed from February to August?
The group stage draw was made on January 14 at the Kenyatta International Conference Center (KICC) in Nairobi.
The CAF revealed the decision to postpone the tournament until August to give the nations more time ready. Kenya at that time did not have the stadium ready to organize the tournament.
“I am pleased with the ongoing construction and rehabilitation of infrastructure and football equipment in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. I am confident that stadiums, gymnasiums, hotels, hospitals and infrastructure and other equipment will be at the required CAF levels to prepare, August 2025, the great success of the African Nations Totalenergies (CHAN) Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda through the Caf’s Mostsepe4 website.
What team will Kenya fight on Chan 2024?
Kenya will now host its first CAF Championship, and expectations are increasingly that Benni McCarthy’s squad is better.
Harambee Stars will open its campaign against DR Congo, before playing against Angola. Their third game will be against Morocco before ending their group action campaign against Zambia.
CAF offers Chan 2024 Security Update
In an associated report, CAF Security and Security Chief, Christian Emeruwa, assured fans that adequate security measures had been imposed before Chan 2024.
Emeruwa acknowledged that they had been pursuing a massive wave of protests against the government witnessed in the country.
Internal Security Minister Kipchumba Murkomen had called on Kenyans to be good during the tournament.
