More than 38 people were killed after bandits consumed the Catholic Church in the DRC

People suspected of being members of Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) have killed at least 38 people following a brutal attack on a church in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The group linked to the Islamic State (IS) targeted a church within the city of Komanda in the Ituri region early on Sunday, July 27.

What happened during the DRC church attack?

According to the report of Al Jazeera, Witnesses and local officials said armed militants invaded the church and killed more than 20 believers gathered on a one -night vigil with swords and guns.

“The attackers focused mainly on Christians who had gathered to the night of the Catholic church. Sadly, many were killed by swords and bullets,” said Christophe Munyanderu, a human rights activist in Komanda.

More victims were discovered in nearby houses burned.

Shops and businesses in the surrounding areas were looted and burned during the attack, exacerbating damage in an already fragile area.

The UN -backed radio reported 43 deaths, while humanitarian sources continue to seek more victims.

The Commander’s Authorities will intervene to intervene

Representatives of the local civil society have condemned the attack and criticized the lack of sufficient security in Komanda despite the large presence of government forces.

The incident has sparked a new military call to intervene in a hurry to protect civilians despite the ongoing threats in the area.

Many residents were reportedly fleeing to the nearby city of Bunia, fearing further violence. Security forces say the operation continues to search for the attackers and prevent further attacks.

ADF group, whose origin is a rebel group of Uganda which emerged in the 1990s, launched a violence in eastern DRC, repeatedly carrying out attacks on civilians.

Although the group previously claimed to fight for Muslim rights in Uganda, it has since changed to a broad rebel movement that focuses on communities on religious grounds in Uganda and the DRC.
