Kanu has shot down reports that its party leader, Gideon Moi, is getting cozy with President William Ruto and the Kenya Kwanza administration. The party insists Moi has no intention of working with the current regime, branding the assertion misleading and political.
In a Thursday statement, Kanu responded to a viral video on social media. The video appears to show the former Baringo Senator rallying behind the government – a representation the party has described as false and misleading.
“Our attention has been drawn to a misleading video clip that has resurfaced on social media, falsely suggesting that Hon. Gideon Moi is currently aligning himself with the current regime. We wish to set the record straight that Hon. Gideon Moi has neither the desire nor the inclination to support this regime,” the statement read.
Kanu explained that the footage in question was taken during the 2021 funeral of Hosea Kiplagat and has been distorted through false transcriptions to misrepresent Moi’s comments. The party accused those behind the clip of engaging in a deliberate disinformation campaign aimed at manipulating public perception.
The party also questioned the timing of the resurfacing of the clip, pointing out that its circulation is aimed at distracting the nation from the government’s current troubles with public trust.
“The calculated timing of this shallow and futile misinformation campaign to dupe the public is telling. It comes at a time when the government is rapidly losing public trust and grasping at anything, including fabricating alliances where none exist,” Kanu said.
Kanu reiterated that any decision regarding a political alliance must be via the appropriate party channels. The party asserted that Moi remains dedicated to the ideals of Kanu and has not supported President Ruto or his administration.
“Fundamental decisions about political alliances are sanctioned through structured party processes,” the statement emphasized.
Until such processes determine otherwise, Kanu maintains that Gideon Moi will continue to champion the party’s independent political position.
