Gospel musician Lawrence Munya, better known as Weezdom, has opened up about the emotional and professional turmoil that led him to seek rehabilitation treatment.
Speaking during a live interview with a local TV station on Sunday, July 13, 2025, Weezdom disclosed that his rehab journey was fueled by career upheaval, grief, professional pressure, and dependency on alcohol.
“Around this time last year, I was in a rehabilitation centre because of alcohol addiction and depression,” Weezdom revealed.
Weezdom was discharged from rehabilitation in October 2024 after completing a four-month program. He had been admitted in July 2024 following a period of depression that led to alcohol addiction.

Career shift
Weezdom, during the interview, disclosed that in 2019, he shelved his gospel music career to take on a managerial role for secular artist Bahati, a transition he later realised did not come from the heart.
He says he faced overwhelming pressure and no support as he attempted to redefine himself in a different musical territory.
“In 2019, I made a decision to shelve my musical career, which is why you saw Bahati announcing me as his manager, but later I came to find out that it was not a decision from my heart,” he said.
Grief
He went on to narrate that the emotional weight intensified in 2020 with the loss of the mother of his child. Weezdom described sinking into depression and losing financial stability, even being auctioned.
Feeling abandoned and devoid of support, he turned to alcohol as a refuge, worsening his mental state.

“In 2020, I lost the mother of my child, and it really affected me, Pia mimi kuona nimewacha kufanya gospel na nimeenda kumanage a secular brand nilikuwa in a different territory, and I had a lot of pressure because no one was supporting that move,” he added.
Alcohol as a coping mechanism
Searching for solace, Weezdom started drinking heavily, even daily, to numb the pain. He acknowledged that alcohol dependency affected his professional accountability, eventually costing him the managerial role with Bahati.
“Niliquite job ya kumanage Bahati because nilifeel si space yangu, nko na brokenness, sina pesa, I was auctioned, mtu hajaokoka ama amebackslide kimbilio yake si kupigia watu wamuweke kwa maombi kimbilio ni pombe. That is how nilianza kutafuta refuge kwa places ni wrong nikajipata vitu zinanisourround zote zinanipeleka kwa depression na addiction,”he added.
