Former Raila Odinga’s agent in the 2022 general elections, Saitabao Ole Kanchory, has launched a scathing attack on the legitimacy of President William Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza government.

Taking to his X page on Sunday, July 6, 2025, the outspoken lawyer sensationally claimed that President Ruto’s administration ceased to be in June 2024, when anti-government protesters stormed the Kenyan parliament in protest of the punitive tax measures imposed by the Finance Bill of 2024.

Kanchory thus asserts that the people reserve the right to declare Monday, July 7, 2025, as a public holiday as the sovereign being of all the powers enshrined in the Kenyan constitution.

Transitional govt

“This regime effectively fell in June last year, and the bread-based regime is merely a transitional arrangement. Tomorrow, Monday 7/7, is officially a public holiday declared by the Sovereign People of Kenya as holders of the radical title and reversionary power in Kenya. The People,” his statement on X read.

His sentiments come amid rising tension as Kenyans prepare to commemorate the day that remembers Kenya’s struggle for multi-party democracy.

The events of the justice for representation 35 years ago galvanised the Kenyan public and intensified calls for political reform, a development that coincides with heightened calls from Kenyan youths and the larger public.

However, with the continued crackdown from the government on dissidents and citizens, especially the youth, engaging in a constitutionally protected right, it remains to be seen how the day will be commemorated.

In the build-up to the June 25 protest, the government dismissed calls for scheduled protests, declaring it a normal working day and warning young people not to be misled by political interests.

“There will be no protests on Wednesday, June 25, 2025. It is a normal working day. Let no one deceive you into engaging in activities that could put your future at risk,” the government spokesperson Isaac Mwaura said.

“Go to work, open your businesses, attend your classes. Let us not be dragged backwards by chaos disguised as activism.”

Mwaura accused unnamed political actors of using social media to incite the youth under the guise of marking an anniversary, warning that such actions could destabilise the country and harm the economy.

“We know politicians are hiding behind hashtags and influencers to push young people into the streets. But where are they when the chaos starts? Where are they when the youth are being arrested or injured?” he posed.

He emphasised that while the Constitution protects the right to peaceful assembly, any attempts to disrupt public order or incite violence will not be tolerated.

“You have a right to protest, yes, but that right must be exercised peacefully and within the confines of the law. There will be no room for anarchy, looting, or blocking roads,” Mwaura stated.
