A fire broke out at Embakasi Girls High School in Mukuru, Nairobi County, causing significant damage to school property, including one of the dormitories, early Sunday morning, July 6, 2025.
The incident, which was confirmed by the Kenya Red Cross, prompted an immediate emergency response from the Nairobi Fire Brigade, the Red Cross Action Team, and local Community-Based Response Teams. Three injury casualties have been reported so far.
“Fire at Embakasi Girls’ School, Nairobi County. Efforts to contain it are underway,” read a statement by the Kenya Red Cross posted on the X account.
“As investigations into the cause of the blaze continue, the school community is grappling with the shock and disruption caused by the incident. The fire has not only damaged infrastructure but has also disrupted the learning environment for hundreds of students.” Red Cross said.
The Red Cross said it has contained the fire fully and is assessing the extent of the damage.
“The fire has been contained by the Nairobi City County Fire Brigade, the Kenya Red Cross, and community members. One dormitory was affected. Three injured students were attended to by Kenya Red Cross first responders. Damage assessment is ongoing,” the Red Cross said.

Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, reacting to the tragedy, expressed deep sorrow and assured the school community of his support.
“We are deeply saddened to learn about the devastating fire at Embakasi Girls High School, Embakasi South Constituency, which has caused significant damage to property and the learning environment,” said the legislator.
In a heartfelt message, Babu Owino extended his sympathies to those directly impacted.
“In this difficult time, please know that our thoughts are with the students, teachers, staff, and families affected by this unfortunate incident. While the loss is great, we stand in full solidarity with the school community as they begin the journey of recovery and rebuilding,” read his statement.
The MP also emphasised the importance of community unity in overcoming such challenges.
“Tragedies like this remind us of the strength of unity and support,” he said, encouraging the public and education stakeholders to assist in the school’s recovery efforts.
