The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has now confirmed that traffic has been restored along the Nairobi Southern Bypass (Kikuyu-bound) between the Virtual Weighbridge and Ngong Interchange following the successful removal of the overturned oil tanker and clearance of the spill.
In an update issued on Saturday evening, July 5,2025 KeNHA assured motorists that the affected section is once again accessible. However, they urged drivers to approach the area with caution and cooperate with traffic marshals and police officers still on site.
“The Kenya National Highways Authority seeks to notify the public of the traffic restoration along the Nairobi Southern Bypass (Kikuyu Bound) between the Virtual Weighbridge and Ngong Interchange. The oil tanker has been removed and the oil spillage cleared,” KeNHA posted.
The authority, however, urged caution from all motorists approaching the area, stressing the need for continued vigilance even after the reopening. “Motorists are, however, advised to approach the section with caution and cooperate with the police and traffic marshals on site,” the statement added.

Earlier on Saturday, KeNHA had announced the emergency closure of the section following the oil tanker accident, which rendered the road impassable and posed a serious safety risk to road users.
Eyewitnesses reported long traffic queues forming along the bypass and feeder roads, as some commuters were left stranded. Emergency teams, including fire services and traffic officers, were deployed to manage the scene and oversee recovery efforts.
“We are working cautiously with the relevant emergency services to clear the oil and prevent any further hazard. The road will only be reopened once we confirm it is safe for motorists,” a KeNHA engineer at the scene had earlier told this publication.
Motorists had been advised to use alternative routes such as Waiyaki Way and Uhuru Highway until the bypass was deemed safe.
The Nairobi Southern Bypass remains a vital link between Lang’ata Road and the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway, serving both long-distance transit and local Nairobi traffic. KeNHA has assured the public that further updates on traffic flow and maintenance will be shared through its official platforms.
