Inside CS Kabogo’s meeting with media practitioners

Cabinet Secretary for Information, Communications and the Digital Economy, William Kabogo, has held a high-level meeting with leaders from key media organisations to discuss press freedom, responsible journalism, and the protection of public interest.

In a statement shared on his official X account on Friday, July 4, 2025, CS Kabogo described the engagement as a meaningful exchange of ideas based on open dialogue and mutual respect.

The session brought together representatives from the Kenya Editors’ Guild (KEG), the Association of Media Women in Kenya (AMWIK), the Kenya Union of Journalists (KUJ), and the Media Council of Kenya (MCK).

“This evening, I had the privilege of engaging with the leadership of the Kenya Editors’ Guild (KEG), Association of Media Women in Kenya (AMWIK), and the Kenya Union of Journalists (KUJ), alongside the Media Council of Kenya. It was a meaningful meeting of minds, grounded in open dialogue and mutual respect,” Kabogo stated.

Focus on children’s rights

During the discussions, Kabogo emphasised the importance of protecting children’s rights in media reporting.

He called on media practitioners to prioritise the welfare of minors when covering stories that involve or affect children, highlighting the need for ethical journalism that considers the long-term impact of reporting on vulnerable populations.

“I urged the media to prioritise the protection of public interest, particularly children’s rights when reporting,” he said.

Press freedom

The Cabinet Secretary further advocated for responsible media reporting that respects the right to press freedom, reaffirming the government’s commitment to supporting press freedom in the country.

“I advocated for responsible media reporting that respects the right to press freedom. I also reaffirmed the government’s support for media operations and freedom in the country,” he added.

Among those in attendance were MCK CEO David Omwoyo, KEG President Zubeida Kananu, KUJ Secretary General Erick Oduor, and AMWIK Executive Director Queenter Mbori.
