The late teacher and blogger Albert Ojwang’s widow, Nevenina Ojwang’, has appealed to Kenyans to come out in their numbers to celebrate the birthday of her husband, which she says was due on Monday, July 7, 2025.
Speaking during the burial of Ojwang’ in Kabondo-Kasipul constituency on Friday, July 4, 2025, Nevenina
“July 7 is the birthday of Albert, and it also coincides with Saba Saba. I would like to appeal to all of us to come out in large numbers as we fight for justice and celebrate his life,” Nevenina said.
Saba Saba tension
The remarks come amid a growing tension in the country on the occurrence of another protest on Monday, July 7, 2025, in commemoration of the pro-democracy protest of 1990 that led to the abolishment of the one-party state system in 1991.
Canada has already advised its citizens against travelling to Nairobi over the fears that protests could turn violent and jeopardise the safety of their nationals.

Ojwang’ was buried in a high-profile funeral that saw various local leaders attend his interment service, with most of them demanding justice for the family.
The father of one was the only child in his family and had left distraught parents, a young wife and a son behind after he was killed at the hands of police officers.
Pursuit for justice
In a statement on Friday, July 4, 2025, Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga observed that the late blogger would be remembered for his dedication to community services and that his kindness shall not be forgotten even in death.
“Today, I reiterated my commitment to supporting the family in their pursuit of justice. Albert’s legacy of service and kindness will not be forgotten, and we stand together in demanding accountability and closure for this tragic loss. May his soul rest in eternal peace,” Wanga stated.
Ojwang’s death in the hands of police officers led to widespread demonstrations in the country, leading to several deaths and scores of serious injuries of protesters, police officers and journalists covering the demos.
Equally, the death led to the arrest of several police officers and the stepping aside of the Deputy Inspector General of Police Eliud Lagat, who was the complainant in the case leading to Ojwang’s arrest.
