Opposition leaders Rigathi Gachagua, Kalonzo Musyoka, Fred Matiang’i and others have arrived in Kisumu ahead of their western Kenya tour.

The United Opposition team is scheduled to begin a two-day political tour of western Kenya today, July 3, 2025.

According to their plan, the tour is part of a growing national campaign aimed at rallying public support to address what they term a ‘liberation cause’ for the country.

This comes after the opposition coalition planned vigils in key towns to honour the youths who died last year, a broader strategy to mobilise the country and therefore win over Gen Z voters.

These vigils were a direct response to the crackdown on protests against planned tax hikes and government excesses that resulted in the deaths of several young people.

The vigils were intended to commemorate the anniversary of these protests and the lives lost, while also highlighting the broader issues that fueled the demonstrations, such as government corruption and broken promises.

During the tour, Gachagua will be joined by key opposition figures, including Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, Democratic Action Party–Kenya leader Eugene Wamalwa, former Attorney General Justin Muturi, and former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i.

This tour comes a few days after the political gathering held in Narok County on June 30, where Gachagua described the public turnout as a sea of humanity, reaffirming the opposition’s resolve to push for democratic reforms.

The political charm offensive will be the third significant foray by the coalition after previous tours of Ukambani and the Coast region, where the opposition leaders sustained their push to unseat President William Ruto in the next poll.

During their upcoming tours, Gachagua and Kalonzo seek to consolidate their support bases while also penetrating new territories as they craft what they claim to be a winning ticket for the 2027 general election.
