Nairobi Woman Representative Esther Passaris has called for justice and urgent action to end violence against women following the gruesome murder and sexual assault of 18-year-old Abigael Winner Wanjiku in Mwiki, Kasarani.

Passaris, who attended Abigael’s burial on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, said the young woman’s life had been cut short too soon, and her final journey was a painful reminder of the growing cases of femicide in the country.

She stood in solidarity with Abigael’s family and the Kasarani community, urging for swift investigations and justice for the young girl.

“Abigael’s final journey — a life stolen too soon. We stand with her family and the Kasarani community, demanding justice and an end to violence against our girls,” Passaris stated.

Abigael was found dead on the night of June 19, 2025. Her body was discovered naked and mutilated, lying in a pool of blood. Reports from police indicated she had been attacked while alone at home.

She had multiple stab wounds, signs of sexual assault, and a broken skull. A knife believed to be the murder weapon and a cooking pan suspected to have been used to hit her were recovered from the scene.

On June 23, 2024, Passaris announced a Ksh100,000 reward for any credible information that could lead to the arrest of Abigael’s killer.

After visiting the family of the late teen, Passaris appealed to the public to come forward with any helpful details and assured them of confidentiality.

“Please report to OCS Mwiki Police Station or reach out to me confidentially,” Passaris stated.

The Federation of Women Lawyers in Kenya (FIDA-Kenya) confirmed that Abigael had suffered unimaginable violence. A post-mortem report revealed five stab wounds to the stomach, deep cuts to the neck and right ear, and a severe head injury. FIDA condemned the attack, calling it a clear case of femicide driven by gender-based hatred.

The tragedy deepened when Joshua Nderitu, a peaceful protester who had joined others in demanding justice for Abigael, was shot dead during a demonstration. A post-mortem revealed that he died from a single gunshot wound to the head. Media reports indicate that the police officer responsible for the shooting has since been interdicted.
