Nyandarua Member of Parliament (MP) Wanjiku Muhia has accused the government of shifting blame on Gen Z protests, calling it a deliberate attempt to shift responsibility away from state accountability.

Speaking to a local TV station on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, Muhia said that the youths and even the current opposition leaders had been talking about the June 25 memorial protests, adding that the government is trying to politicise the demos by creating a scenario.

“The Gen Z announced of this demos, they have been saying even we in the opposition have been saying on the 25th, the Gen Z will be remembering their own people who were on the same course and lost their lives, they are just trying to get a scapegoat and just try to create a scenario so that they can even politicise more,”Muhia said.

“Why are we allocating a large sum of money to the department that should even advise or work on time or before time? Why wait until demos are finished, people have lost properties, police stations have been burned, few of them have been killed, and then the DCI and the team, including Murkomen, come and say this was plan by xyz, it is using the few opposition teams currently who should suggest who did that.”

Muhia on demos

Criticising police interference, the vocal MP said that Gen Z has always been peaceful and that the officers deployed during protests should only man the streets and let the protesters protest peacefully.

“Gen Z are always peaceful, and I wonder what would happen if the police just manned the street and let them go, they scream, dance, they shoot the videos, and go home. The doctors, clinical officers and nurses have been coming to parliament for the longest, and nothing happens. I do not see policemen getting worried by that,” she added.

“This demo is for Gen Z because it is kind of a revolution or a movement that the government is scared about. It is attracting the government’s strategy to infiltrate the demos, otherwise, if there is no politician or other plans, the Gen Z are just left to demonstrate. They will do it and go back home in the evening and they will be no looting.”

She further accused the government of fuelling the protest.

“It looks like the government is not ready to cool things and let the country be at peace; actually, it is the government that is putting fire because every day there is something angering the youths, she added.
