Tana River Senator Danson Mungatana has sustained attacks on former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, criticising him as a divisive figure during his tenure as the country’s second deputy president.
Speaking on Wednesday, June 2, 2025, in an empowerment forum in Hola, Tana River, Mungatana hailed Gachagua’s successor as a man fitting the DP title.
Translated: “We have now embraced Kindiki as a good neighbour who has visited us frequently. He is also a fitting and proper DP. The former was a shame of a president. He used to claim and say that the coastal region is not in his plans, and so on. His plans were only shares of the people from his backyard,” he stated.
“It is the reason why we said we will impeach him and control him, but (Mwengi) Mutuse came up with a motion that got him impeached. We want to build a Kenya that is united, but he (Wamunyoro) wanted to chain us with chains of tribalism. It is why we are now united and heading in one direction as coastal leaders,” the former Garsen MP stated.
Ruto-Raila pact
Mungatana further voiced his support for the new political alliance between President Ruto and Orange Democratic Movement leader Raila Odinga.
The senator stressed that the region will deliver a resounding win for the incumbent following the unity between the two principals.
“In the last election, Raila got 54, and we got 44 per cent that is a total of 94 per cent. Now with Ruto and Raila in one camp, we say the 99 per cent will go to our president, and we dare say it will be two terms,” he asserted.

Mungatana’s sentiments come after MP Peter Salaysa recently weighed in on the former deputy president’s impeachment back in 2024.
Speaking during an interview with Oga Obinna on Monday night, June 30, 2025, Salasya said that during his tour in Juja, Kiambu County, while promoting his presidential bid, he told residents that the separation of President William Ruto and Gachagua was the greatest thing that had ever happened, describing it as a blessing for Kenyans.
He added that, had the split not occurred, Kenya would have plunged into deeper trouble.
“I told people of Juja when I was in Githurai that the separation of Ruto and Gachagua was the best thing that ever happened, it was a blessing to Kenyans because if it could not have happened, Kenya ingezama,” Salasya claimed.
